USS ENGLAND REUNION 2012 - St Louis

Postby RJ Lundgren » Thu Sep 29, 2011 9:11 pm

Greeting Shipmates!
I've contacted the St. Louis Conv. & Visitors Bureau about setting up our two ships ship's reunion for June of 2012. The date is not firm until we learn when the Cardinals will be playing their home games for next season as that is the main event for our reunion. Other activities I'm trying to set up will be a visit to the St. Louis Arch and a brewery tour. For our banquet I'd like to set it up as a tour and picnic at the historic Jefferson Barracks. I'm planning to dicker as much as I can to keep our costs as low as humanly possible. My best leverage on prices will be the number of people attending, the more England shipmates their family and friends attending the better. Please send me any questions and suggestions you may have and I'll do my best to address them. Also, it would be a great help if you pass the word!

Just visited with Courtney Brown in St. Louis. It looks as if the best
June weekend would be June 8-10th. Hopefully it'd also be a little
cooler that weekend. Cardinals vs Cleveland.

I've heard a lot of discussion about having another reunion
and there seems to be plenty of interest but so far no one has come
forward to head up the event. I have the time and Des Moines is close
to St. Louis so, I've taken steps to get the ball rolling myself. I have
some experience in organizing similar events so I'm not intimidated
by what needs to be done. I've already talked with Ms. Courtney
Brown with the St. Louis Convention & Visitors Bureau. We've got
some things outlined and I expect to have some solid information
for shipmates before the holiday season begins. Here is what I'm
working on for next June.
June 8-10, 2012
Friday June 8
Welcome to St. Louis social
Saturday June 9
Tour the St. Louis Arch
Brewery Tour
Tour of Historic Jefferson Barracks and picnic banquet
Cardinals baseball game vs Cleveland
Sunday June 10
Depart St. Louis
Ms. Brown will be gathering bids and information for us in
the next few weeks so a decision can be made by early
November. That way reunion information should be in our
shipmates hands by mid November. I think that about covers
things for now. Of course, I always welcome any questions and
suggestions people may have.

We cannot post replies on the Deck Log. Our password does not work and when we request a new one, it doesn't work either. When we tried to alert the administrator, that e-mail was kicked back. We can read what you are posting bur we can't respond. Thanks for all you are doing Mr. Lundgren. Tell us your first name. If we are going to fly to St. Louis we would be willing to come on Thursday and help set up a hospitality room for those arriving on Thursday. We will probably try to extend our stay some way since 2 and 1/2 days aren't very long for a plane trip out and back. Just saying that we are open to something a bit longer than Friday evening- Sunday morning but we can find something to do on our own if in deed the reunion is a Friday afternoon-Sunday morning event. Thanks again for all you are doing.

Hi everyone; Gail and I would have gone this year and if a reunion comes to fruition next year we would plan on attending. Sounds like you don't have a full list of names, addresses etc. I have retained all the information from the Charleston,Philadelphia and Seattle reunions which include names, addresses, e-mails and phone numbers etc of attendees.

Hi everyone,
I took the liberty of posting these two replies from Allens and McCabes, since Jim and Bonnie can't get on. Thank you Randal for all you are doing. These dates are great.

Well - tonight we could log in! We are excited about the prospect of a reunion in St. Louis next June. Count on the Allens from Jacksonville and let us know how we can help. Thanks to R.J. Lundgren and Jim and Janett Brush for getting this going.

One of the most interesting submissions for HQ hotel
in St. Louis has been the Missouri Athletic Club. Here's
a link shipmates, check them out!

Here's another hotel to consider as HQ for the upcoming reunion.
The Millennium Hotel St. Louis is located with the St. Louis Arch
on the East and Busch Stadium on the West. Check out their
website and let me know what you think. Thanks!

A 2012 reunion in St Louis sounds good to me. I'll keep watching for details. Viessman, Wilder, VanDiest, Roberts, et. al? I'm in.

ATTENTION ALL HANDS!
For those interested in the USS England reunion next June in St. Louis
I have narrowed the bids down to two. I have a bit more to work on before
I can post details, they're both pretty close on price. Please take a look at
these two and let me know which place you'd prefer.

Randall,
The MAC doesn't show any kind of sleeping accommodations, at the downtown one. Perhaps I am just not seeing. The Millennium sounds good, and the $164 for a king bed isn't as bad as some. Will they offer a rate for the reunion? It would be close to attractions, too. Thanks for getting back on this. This is probably the one we would prefer.

I see that the rooms at the MAC are about $90.00 and it sounds wonderful to us but we are certainly fine with the other one too. We just want to get together in St. Louis with everyone. Let us know how we can help from Jacksonville, Florida.

Jim and Bonnie, how did you find that? 90 sounds much better. I thought we weren't looking at it right. :)

Shipmates,
Currently the Mo. Athletic Club has a bid of $75/night, parking $10/night and tax 7.25%.
Plus we'd have full access to the facilities; pool, basketball-handball-raquetball courts, sauna
and whirlpool. Voicemail, wireless internet access, and coffee & pots in each room. In my
opinion, a lot of perks we'd have little use for. They are within walking distance of the Arch
and have a bus to Busch Stadium. What I still need to find out about is meeting/hospitality
rooms and if we'd have to dine on our own. They do have 3 restaurants on site. And it is a
very cool place, not your ordinary hotel looking place.

The Millennium has a bid of $80/night, parking $7 and tax of 15.74% (the difference is the
MAC is a non-profit). There's an indoor/outdoor pool, 2 restaurants, whirlpool, and the usual
hotel amenities. Both the Arch and Busch Stadium are within easy walking distance. And free
continental breakfast. The hotel does have great views of the Arch, river, and downtown.

What I was planning for the weekend was a social gathering Friday evening. Saturday Morning
a tour of the Arch and exhibits. A lunch buffet meeting/banquet at the hotel. Then a tour of
the Budweiser Brewery facilities in the afternoon. Supper on our own with tickets to the St.
Louis Cardinals game at probably 6pm. There are a number of free activities, the zoo and
museums for example, for those staying over Sunday but, we'd pretty much wrap up after the
game Saturday and head out on Sunday.

What I'm trying to do is get Millennium to come down to $70/night and arrange transportation
to and from the brewery, which I should have worked out this week. I'm guessing that the
planned events for the weekend, Fri-Sun, should run around $300 per couple, maybe less. That
would include the tours, Cardinals game, and Sat lunch. You might add another $50-$100 for
other meals depending on where you eat. Remember, food and drink at the game is always
somewhat expensive. Unless I can get the Cardinals to treat us (doubtful but I'll try).

 UPDATE!!!
The Millennium has lowered their room rate bid to $77/night. If we can show them that the USS
England crew, our family and friends, will book some 50+ rooms, I believe we may be able to get
them to go to $75. I did ask them to drop to $70/night and $77 was their counter-offer. Also, the
tax rate is just under 16% for rooms and just under 10% for food and beverage.

This looks good to me and it's a lot cheaper than San Diego when the first reunion was held.
